Diabetic neuropathy is one of the most painful problems that occur with the progression of diabetes. Neuropathy is another term for nerve damage, and in this case, it is nerve damage resulting from inadequate blood supply to nerves. The blood supply is restricted by the formation of atherosclerotic plaque in the small blood vessels supplying the nerves, and this is a common result of increased blood lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides) associated with diabetes.
Diabetic neuropathy typically first relates to the feet, and later can affect the hands, the creation of "sowing and glove" pattern of symptoms. As the nerves degenerate from lack of blood supply (and therefore a lack of vital oxygen for nervous tissue), various symptoms nerve damage begin to emerge. The symptoms of diabetic neuropathy may include numbness, burning pain, tingling and shooting pain.
Due to diabetic neuropathy is linked to poor blood flow (and the consequent reduction of oxygen) to the nerves, the symptoms tend to be weaker in the extremes of activity level. When people with diabetic neuropathy is idle for a long period of time, like when you sleep, blood pressure and decreases the systemic circulation, resulting in decreased blood flow and oxygen supply to the nerves, and increased symptoms of neuropathy. This often results in restless sleep, or a total inability to sleep due to pain.
At the other end of the range of activities, when someone with neuropathy Diabetes exerts himself, the global circulation increases, but no increase in oxygen uptake by large muscles. This means less oxygen available in small blood vessels supplying the nerves in the feet and hands. This is why it is often necessary for people with diabetic neuropathy to rest frequently whenever you have to walk or exert themselves.
Besides pain, the loss of nerve function in the feet begin to interfere with balance and coordination when walking. The balance is controlled by nerve signals from the feet, the visual cues from the eyes, and from the lobby system the inner ear. While normally the normal balance can be maintained when one of these 3 systems is partially diminished depending severe losses in a system, or partial loss of two or all 3 can dramatically interfere with the balance when standing or walking. Since diabetes not only causes loss of function nerve in the foot, but also tends to eventually interfere with vision, and because elderly diabetics often have other losses in the sense visual and vestibular great loss of balance may result. The loss of equilibrium is often one of the most debilitating aspects of diabetes neuropathy, and many sometimes causing falls and other accidents resulting in injury.
Medications are available that can lessen the pain of diabetic neuropathy, but do little to improve real nerve function, or help with neuropathy associated with balance problems. There are some natural treatments, however, appear to improve function nerve in many cases. Of course, the first line of defense is simply to make the lifestyle changes necessary to try to reverse diabetes and / or prevent deterioration, including diet and exercise. Beyond that, there are nutritional supplements and other interventions that have shown promising results in recent studies, in fact, improvement of nerve function in cases of diabetic neuropathy.
Probably the best of these natural treatments are alpha-lipoic acid. Numerous studies have shown significant improvements in diabetic neuropathy with oral and intravenous supplementation of this nutrient. Alpha-lipoic acid is a strong antioxidant that is beneficial for cardiovascular health, but also appears to have a direct effect on diabetes-healing nerve damage.
Another promising treatment is the Magnetic therapy, particularly using the magnetic shoe insoles for diabetic neuropathy in the feet. It should be noted that a wide range of force magnet used in magnetic insoles, and it seems that the effectiveness of magnet therapy improves with higher magnet strength (higher number of Gauss). Preliminary studies have shown good results with magnetic insoles, and it is speculated that magnetic gloves can produce similar results in neuropathy of the hands.
While it may not be possible to completely eliminate diabetic neuropathy, there is much that can be done to improve the situation of natural resources in most cases.
