Ok first I want to say that anyone can do all the work themselves if they are super ambitious and willing to learn all trades! But it does not do it all the work myself! Some of the phases are best left to other professionals in the finishing trades to us!
For "newbies" who have never done remodeling house much at all, this is what I recommend is trying to achieve for himself during the remodeling of the basement:
1.) All Framing
2.) All utilities (except for connections on the panel or load center of the house!) Note: The license must be obtained electronically inspected by an inspector electrical codes!
3.) All plumbing, except sewage ejector system and real pressure tie-ins (must be done by a note) Pro: Many municipalities require plumbing to be done by a plumber!
4.) All trim (base, windows and doors, chair rails, crown, door installations trim and stairs
5.) Tile (bathrooms, bars, exterior entry door)
6.) Bar Cabinets Installation
7.) Establish vanity bathroom, bathroom accessories
8.) Accessories Bath set
9.) All closet shelves
10.) Doorknobs Installation
11.) Insulation in all exterior walls
12.) Home Theater Wiring
13.) Built-in library, stereo racks, cue Wardrobes, shadow box Wardrobes
14.) Any lighting (recessed, sconce, accessories area)
15.) Painting or staining
What we recommend NEWBIES DO NOT attempt to do for themselves:
1.) Our hanging and finishing (call a professional!) It has to be perfect and do not get it right the first time, only trust me this time!
2.) Expulsion of sewerage and drainage systems for swimming Association. (Call a plumber Pro)
3.) Switch boxes electrical hook-ups "(call a professional job that is dangerous if you do not fully understand)
4.) Carpet (carpet needs to be installed and "stretched" properly so as not to "relax" and wrinkle-up)
Installation 5.) Code adopted by the windows and exterior doors to leave. (this requires cutting through the burden of correctly installing solid walls. best left to a contractor Pro)
6.) Waterproof Perimeter Systems (this is a dirty and physically hard work and should be done properly to ensure no water coming ever get back into their newly finished basement! Note: Only those who need a system like this you have to worry about installing this! You know who you are!
Well I hope this gives you a round idea as to what should be the planning in making yourself and what you should hire a professional contractor to complete for you! This is not rocket science, but something is definitely best left for others more experience to handle for us!
I just wanted to mention that as an additional service remodeling the basement of my company (The Company basement remodeling), do designs and basement floor plans for clients who want to do the work themselves but need a design template professional and a detailed plan from which to build from and use of building permits.
When a client asks me for this service, which will also include A detailed list of materials with an estimated cost laminate materials for homeowners to shop. So nothing is lost and the client knows exactly how much have money to spend on materials from the door!
