For the next few weeks, I'm turning into my articles to my husband, Dr. Craig Thomas, DC, for posting and sharing with you the entries in your month long trip to India for Ayurvedic treatment.
After just suffering from a stroke and seeking help from Western medicine, Dr. Craig decided we could do more to improve his condition if he went to India, the heart of Ayurvedic medicine, to work with Ayurvedic practitioners in facilities who specialize in this traditional healing science.

Hello, friends. This is Dr. Craig Thomas here, husband and partner of Dr. Helen Thomas. Over the coming weeks, I share with you a very personal story of healing and Ayurveda. The following is just a beginning: as we shall see, the story is not over.
On 13 August 2008, our world changed completely in an instant. I had an accident stroke. I was visiting our son in Puerto Rico where he is currently attending medical school. That night, I felt tired and decided to go to bed early. As is my custom, I was laying in bed meditating when suddenly I felt as if I got hit in the back of the head with a baseball bat. I passed out.
When I arrived the next morning, I crawled out of bed and stumbled into the living room of my son. I was in my shaky feet, the left side of my body was numb and my speech was confused. For a moment, my son thought he was drunk, but soon realized that something serious had happened to me. My symptoms persist for the day, and I decided to cut my trip short and fly back home to California.
The day before I left for Puerto Rico, who had gone to see a cardiologist. He had been feeling a little fatigue and difficulty breathing for weeks, and the doctor scheduled me for cardio testing after my trip.
A CT scan at the local hospital confirmed our worst fears: that he had indeed suffered a stroke, and the small part of my brain that is affected now ischemic (dead).
For those of you who are unfamiliar with medical terminology, two types of strokes: ischemic and hemorrhagic. Ischemic, like mine, is where the blood supply to the brain is interrupted for a period. Hemorrhagic is when a blood vessel or vessels, the bursts and causes bleeding or swelling.
Over the next two weeks, I underwent a series of tests and exams. I had several blood tests, An echocardiogram, an exercise electrocardiogram with injections of contrast medium, MRI of the brain, both my brain and circulatory system, and I med with a neurologist.
The medical analysis is that I diasystolic heart dysfunction which causes less blood and therefore less oxygen to reach the brain, puts me at risk for stroke and other heart problems. This was probably caused by hypertension, which are most likely related with my weight. I was surprised to learn that I have no blocked arteries or high cholesterol (although the doctors wanted to put me in statin medications as a measure … Precautionary!).
The past month has been perhaps the most difficult of my life. There is improvement: not stain my words – if I am very tired – and the numbness on the left side is almost gone. What I have is extreme fatigue, muscle pain and discomfort in my body, and an inability to concentrate or focus. My head feels like a mass of cotton, and walk like the proverbial drunken sailor.
Doctors say there's nothing more they can do. No surgery which will be in my heart, and apart from the basic medication high blood pressure, no drug that can be taken to help me. I was told to lose 50 pounds, Exercise every day, and expect the best. In six months, we will know if any of my symptoms are permanent.
Well, that's not good enough for me! I aspire to be more in the life of a potted plant! I've been getting great Ayurvedic herbs and world-class chiropractic adjustments, and I'm still not back to my old self.
Fortunately for me, our friend and colleague, Dr. Narendra Pendse, has offered to oversee and manage my recovery through intensive medical treatments known as Ayurvedic Panchakarma – if I will get to her clinic in India! The reason that this treatment must be done in India is which will take place in a hospital, and they do things there that have not been performed outside India. I have witnessed firsthand the miracles that Ayurvedic physicians out in India, so I'm jumping on the opportunity! I'm leaving on Monday, September 22nd for a month in Pune, India, so by the time you read this, I I'll be there.
As I understand the goals of treatment will be several: first, reduce blood pressure. Secondly, the reconstruction of the heart muscles. Finally, reformulation of metabolic mechanisms, so that I can lose weight and use food more efficiently. I'm sure what procedures are used, but I'll report and let you know exactly what is happening at each step of the road.
